Choosing the Right Luxury Motor Yacht (My Philosophy As a Broker)

“Anyone leading a high-profile, minutely scheduled business life will find that when looking for the ideal ‘escape and relaxation’ environment for their families and themselves, nothing comes close to the yachting experience.”

I sold a luxury motor yacht—a Swedish-built 141’ vessel appropriately named Indulgence—to a
Detroit businessman who has since become a good friend.

During the week, this businessman
could be found flying his private jet between ten different states, managing the many offices and
over 3,000 employees that were in his capable hands.

His workdays were all about rapid decision making and exceeding customer expectations. He was good at what he did (that’s putting it lightly).

But during his downtime, he wanted to shake off all that responsibility and feel like he was the one being fully cared for.

People charter a yacht or decide to buy a yacht of their own for many different reasons.

There’s nothing quite like looking at a familiar place from the view of open water, like when I see my home in sunny South Florida take on new shape when I’m looking at her by boat.

There’s also nothing quite like being able to reach rarely-touched beaches and destinations knowing you’re one of just a few people who have recently docked on the sands.

But when it comes to owning a yacht, it’s not just the destinations that create peace and magic.

Most of the magic happens in the boat.

What my client wanted on his yacht vacations was family time. He wanted to take a break from needing to make the kind of high-pressure decisions that could affect his 3,000 employees and their families.

To get that kind of experience you need to put in more effort than just browsing yachts for sale and picking one with a trendy yacht interior and sleek exterior.

It takes knowing what you want out of your yachting experience, and having a team around you—including your yacht broker—who understands your needs and can communicate which boats have the technical specs, amenities, and yacht interiors to make your vision happen.

That’s why your yacht broker shouldn’t just be spending his days walking you through boats and pointing you toward the flashiest or most expensive yacht.

He should know the market, and be able to communicate how what’s available will fit into the yachting experience you have in mind.

Here are three commitments that I was making to my clients in 2003, and am still making to my clients today

  1. We’ll make your yachting adventures amazing. Whatever “amazing” means to you.

For my client-turned-good-friend, that meant helping him find a boat big enough to house his core crew of 10 (who organized his trips, catered to all the family’s day to day needs and turned my client’s whole yachting vacation into one that was exceptionally suited to his tastes and fully decision-free).

It also meant choosing a vessel that was outfitted with the sundeck space and other amenities needed to give his two kids space to explore.

We succeeded on both fronts with Indulgence.

  1. We’ll help with it all.

For a number of years, I was an owner of a large yacht brokerage. But I left for one reason: listing quantity was being prioritized over quality of experience.

Now my wife Paula and I work as a team to offer our clients exceptional service at every step.

We believe that you should have a luxury experience when buying a luxury product. That means having someone to help with organizing a crew, navigating refits or insurance, and talking through your itinerary plans or want-to-visit destinations.

  1. We’ll make it easy.

That sense of “all the details are taken care of for me” ease you feel when you’re lounging on your luxury yacht in a foreign sea, in the middle of your family vacation—that’s the same sense of ease you should feel when buying a yacht.

When you have an industry expert who can take care of everything for you and is willing to think out of the box to get deals done, buying a yacht should feel smooth as serene waters.

Not everyone makes those kinds of commitments.

But that’s why when you’re looking to charter or buy a luxury motor yacht, finding someone with the right industry experience to make your ideal yachting vacation happen is key.
